Catchments as space-time filters – a joint spatio-temporal geostatistical analysis of runoff and precipitation

چکیده

In this paper catchments are conceptualised as linear space-time filters. Catchment area A is interpreted as the spatial support and the catchment response time T is interpreted as the temporal support of the runoff measurements. These two supports are related by T∼A which embodies the space-time connections of the rainfall-runoff process from a geostatistical perspective. To test the framework, spatiotemporal variograms are estimated from about 30 years of quarter hourly precipitation and runoff data from about 500 catchments in Austria. In a first step, spatio-temporal variogram models are fitted to the sample variograms for three catchment size classes independently. In a second step, variograms are fitted to all three catchment size classes jointly by estimating the parameters of a point/instantaneous spatiotemporal variogram model and aggregating (regularising) it to the spatial and temporal scales of the catchments. The exponential, Cressie-Huang and product-sum variogram models give good fits to the sample variograms of runoff with dimensionless errors ranging from 0.02 to 0.03, and the model parameters are plausible. This indicates that the first order effects of the spatio-temporal variability of runoff are indeed captured by conceptualising catchments as linear space-time filters. The scaling exponent κ is found to vary between 0.3 and 0.4 for different variogram models.

Spatio-Temporal Analysis of Drought Severity Using Drought Indices and Deterministic and Geostatistical Methods (Case Study: Zayandehroud River Basin)

Drought monitoring is a fundamental component of drought risk management. It is normally performed using various drought indices that are effectively continuous functions of rainfall and other hydrometeorological variables. In many instances, drought indices are used for monitoring purposes. Geostatistical methods allow the interpolation of spatially referenced data and the prediction of v...

Spatio-temporal and Ecological Analysis of Brucellosis in North of Iran

Epidemic diseases are a public health concern that has many economic costs and health problems. The geographical distribution of these diseases is a spatial and temporal process. By understanding the process and identifying the factors that affect it, we can take an effective step in preventing and treating these diseases. Brucellosis is one of the most important zoonotic diseases in Iran. To b...

Dynamic Texture Recognition Using Time-Causal Spatio-Temporal Scale-Space Filters

This work presents an evaluation of using time-causal scalespace filters as primitives for video analysis. For this purpose, we present a new family of video descriptors based on regional statistics of spatiotemporal scale-space filter responses and evaluate this approach on the problem of dynamic texture recognition. Our approach generalises a previously used method, based on joint histograms ...

Spatio-temporal precipitation error propagation in runoff modelling: a case study in central Sweden

The propagation of spatio-temporal errors in precipitation estimates to runoff errors in the output from the conceptual hydrological HBV model was investigated. The study region was the Gimån catchment in central Sweden, and the period year 2002. Five precipitation sources were considered: NWP model (H22), weather radar (RAD), precipitation gauges (PTH), and two versions of a mesoscale analysis...
